    Bush: Biggest Spender Ever!

    Published: Tuesday, February 4, 2003

Yesterday, the New York Times reported, "President Bush sent Congress a $2.23 trillion spending plan." The plan will swell the budget deficit to record levels. The Times reported on January 29, "White House officials suggested today that the federal budget deficit could surpass $300 billion this year, setting a record."

Furthermore, members of the House Budget Office are expected to report tomorrow that "the deficit this year could hit $306 billion and that the government will run up $1.7 trillion in deficits by the end of 2011."

During his State of the Union speech, Bush proposed 20 new federal policy initiatives including billions of new tax dollars for things such as hydrogen-powered automobiles, training and recruiting of mentors and new drug treatment programs. To date, President Bush has proposed nearly 100 new federal programs and has planned to spend more tax dollars than any president in history.

Bush's budget also sends $10 billion to twelve African nations for AIDS education and drugs. This is in addition to the $5 billion already sent to Africa for the same purpose. This massive expenditure of U.S. tax dollars is taking place even though no one at the White House seems to know exactly how this money is going to help the more than 30 million Africans who have already contracted the AIDS virus.

Bush's budget also gives more power to the Internal Revenue Service. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, "Bush would give the IRS a 5.3 percent boost to $10.4 billion for the budget year that begins Oct. 1. That will include $133 million for added audits of businesses and high-income taxpayers."

Furthermore, Bush's response to the Columbia disaster is to add $500 million to NASA's $15 billion budget.

As is the case with most everyone in Washington, D.C., Bush obviously believes that the panacea to every problem in the United States and around the world is to throw gargantuan amounts of tax dollars at them. Throw possible conflicts with Iraq, North Korea and who knows who else into the mix and it boggles the imagination what Bush could actually wind up spending.

The insatiable thirst of the federal government for power and money will eventually bankrupt and enslave this country. Some would argue that America is already bankrupt and that tyranny is just around the corner.

Any kind of prolonged military conflict or unexpected financial collapse could result in massive numbers of layoffs, home foreclosures and personal bankruptcies. It could also induce the appearance of an unbridled police state. Many would say that the precursor for this already exists in the new Homeland Security Department.

Most Americans are already "head over heels" in debt. Millions have no savings whatsoever. Many are working multiple jobs just to make ends meet. Furthermore, more Americans than ever are dependent upon government for their sustenance, and government meddling and interference into our daily lives is ubiquitous. Yet, G. W. Bush and his cohorts in Congress continue to expand the growth of federal spending like there is no tomorrow.

People who want to support Bush can go ahead and do so, but it is laughable when they call him a conservative. He's not. He's the biggest spender in American history!
